The ultimate packing list.
What to wear?
Cross-country skiing is essentially like running in the cold (except we think it’s more fun). Downhill ski or snowboard pants will weigh you down; instead, try layering a base legging beneath a wind-proof pant. Warm gloves and a beanie and neck warmer will be important if the temperatures drop.
Here’s a full list of recommended items to dress for success!
Clothing:
Technical base layers (we recommend wool)
I love something with a higher neck, like this 1/4 zip from Smartwool, this fan-favorite from Odlo, or this option from Kari Traa. These brands also have great baselayer leggings.
Windproof athletic jacket and pants
Here are a few examples: Odlo or Swix pants, Odlo softshell jacket, Bjorn Daehlie jacket.
Buff for your neck / ears (highly recommended)
A headband (like this one, or this one) works great beneath a ball cap when it is actively snowing.
Beanie
Gloves
Downhill ski mittens and gloves might not fit into your pole straps. Try something like this, instead. (Lobster claws also help those prone to cold digits.)
Technical socks (hiking socks work well for nordic ski boots)
Warm down jacket
Casual cabin wear
Yoga clothes
Swimsuit
Other:
Sunblock + sunglasses
Reusable water bottle
Yoga mat
Headlamp
Hand warmers
Snowshoes if desired
Electrolytes / snacks
